They Might Be Giants
For the last 10 years or so there is a fun band that Kim and I go see every time they come to town called They Might Be Giants. We first discovered them at the KROQ acoustic Christmas concert where they played just 3 songs, but what a fun show they put on!? We saw them next at the Troubador, a very small club in West Hollywood and then again and again and again all over the city. We were aware that people like to hang out by the tour bus after the shows to meet the band, but this was something that we were never comfortable with. Even at the "kids" show we went to where they were signing afterwards, it seemed innapropriate to stand in line. Where was our niece when we needed her!?! Rats.
So how glad were we to hear that John, John, Dan, Dan and Marty were going to be performing at Ameoba Records in Hollywood and would be signing afterwards!?! We were so excited- at least Cris was- that he went to three vintage record stores looking for an authentic vinyl album to have them sign so that we could hang it on the wall with some of our other autorgraphs. Unfortunately, there were none to be had. So because he was so in love with the idea of an autographed album, he sacrificed his Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass album to make a "fake" TMBG commemorative album.
Cris was not sure how they would react. After the show, when it was our turn to meet the guys, at first John Flansburg was like- "oh wow!" and then in disbelief "you want us to sign the BLACK part!?" But then Cris explained that the record was not, in fact, theirs and that he had made it himself. To which John Linnel exclaimed- "that's actually a really cool album." So we're stll not sure what they finally thought about the concept of ruining a perfectly good record, but at least we got a good story out of it :)
We were bummed that Dan and Dan and Marty were not signing too- but C'est la vie we guess...
